A Simple Guide to Fabrics for Pakistani Dresses
By Tariq Shahab · 21 September 2026

The fabric you choose determines how a dress falls, feels and holds its shape. A beautiful design can look completely different when made in a fabric that is too stiff, too soft or unsuitable for the season.
Lawn and cotton
Breathable lawn is ideal for everyday summer wear and light printed suits. Cotton gives slightly more structure and works well for kurtas, trousers and practical office outfits. Both are comfortable, easy to style and suitable for clean everyday tailoring.
Linen and khaddar
These fabrics suit cooler weather and have a naturally textured appearance. They work best in relaxed cuts with enough ease for movement. Pre-washing is important because natural fibres may shrink.
Chiffon and georgette
Chiffon creates soft movement for dupattas, overlays and formal dresses. It usually needs a lining and careful seam finishing. Georgette has a little more weight and can be easier to manage in flowing silhouettes.
Organza
Organza holds shape beautifully, making it useful for statement sleeves, dupattas and structured formal details. Because it is crisp and sheer, placement and finishing matter greatly.
Silk and velvet
Silk gives a rich drape and subtle shine for weddings and formal events. Velvet is ideal for winter occasions, borders and jackets, but its direction must be handled consistently during cutting.
Always choose fabric with the final design in mind. If you are unsure, show your tailor the design reference before buying so the weight, fall and transparency can be checked first.
